(Flagstaff, AZ) - Detectives are trying to determine how a man died who went for a swim in a pool in Havasupai Canyon in Grand Canyon National Park and never resurfaced.

Gerry Blair, with the Coconino County Sheriff’s Office, says they received a report of a deceased individual in the area of Mooney Falls at the bottom of Havasupai Canyon in the Grand Canyon on Wednesday about 11:30 a.m.

Witnesses told sheriff’s deputies that 32-year-old Michael Allen of Ogden, Utah was camping with friends and family when he went swimming in a pool at the top of Mooney Falls. He went underwater and never came up.

The sheriff's office said Allen went over the Falls and traveled down about 200 feet. His body washed up on a bank about 50 to 100 yards from Mooney Falls. It is unclear whether Allen became unconscious while in the pool for some reason or was hung up on debris underwater. Detectives and sheriff’s deputies are continuing with their investigation.
