Homecoming activities will begin on Monday, Oct. 22nd, with a formal student kick-off event at the Encampment Mall from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The annual Homecoming Queen Pageant will take place on Tuesday, Oct. 23rd, at 7:30 p.m., at the Avenna Center Cox Auditorium. This year’s Homecoming Queen pageant features 14 contestants vying for the title of Miss Dixie 2012-13. Tickets are available for purchase in advance or at the door for $5 per person at the Avenna Center Ticket Office.
Festivities continue the following evening on Wednesday, Oct. 24th, as DSCSA will host comedian Tommy Johnagin in concert at the Gardner Center Ballroom beginning at 7:30 p.m. Then on Thursday (Oct. 25th) at 2:30 p.m., Dixie State will renew its tradition of painting “D Road,” which due to construction, has moved just south on 800 East in front of the Burns Arena. Later that evening, DSCSA will hold its annual Homecoming Powder Puff Football game under the lights at Hansen Stadium beginning at 7:30 p.m.
Raging Red Day is set for Friday, Oct. 26th, in which all DSC students, faculty and staff, alumni and community are asked to show their “Dixie Spirit” and wear red all day. In keeping with the “Dixie Spirit” theme, the DSCSA will present its annual “Rock the Mall” school song competition at 1 p.m., on the Gardner Center Plaza.
Friday’s alumni activities include the Alumni Assembly in the Eccles Concert Hall at 10 a.m., followed Golden Generation Luncheon and Program, where the Dixie Class of 1962 will be inducted, in the Gardner Center Ballroom at 12 noon. The Alumni Assembly is free to attend, while tickets for the Golden Generation Luncheon may be purchased for $12 through the DSC Alumni Office by calling 435-652-7535. Then that evening, DSC’s baseball program will host a special player reunion at the Wade Alumni House from 5-7 p.m., where Dixie baseball alumni will have a chance to meet new DSC baseball head coach Chris Pfatenhauer and his coaching staff. Following the baseball event at 7 p.m., the annual Dixie Alumni Reunion Party will be held at the Wade Alumni House. The party is free and open to all DSC alumni and their families and light refreshments will be served.
The Friday night activities will wind down during the midnight hour as DSC will host the 4th-Annual Alumni 5-Kilometer Run/Walk at Hansen Stadium. For information or to register, call the DSC Alumni Office at 435-652-7535.
Saturday’s (Oct. 27th) festivities begin with the annual Founder’s Day Assembly and Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony at 9 a.m., in the St. George Tabernacle. Admission to the Assembly is free. Dixie State will induct five new members into its Hall of Fame, including Dixie alumni and longtime benefactors J. Ralph (’65) Cheri (Bennett) Atkin (’65); DSC alum Antone R. Bowler (’33); Dixie alum W. Patrick McCafferty (’58); and Dixie alum and former student body president (1950-51) A. Delmont Truman (’51).
The annual Homecoming Parade begins at 10 a.m., and will travel east on 100 South Street, beginning at the original Dixie campus on Main Street and ending at the Old Gym on DSC’s campus on 700 East. DSC alum and former Major League Baseball pitcher Bruce Hurst (’67) will serve as the parade’s grand marshal.
Line-up for the parade, which will take place on both sides of 100 South at 200 West, beginning at 9 a.m., while the parade itself will start at 10 a.m. Once again this year, DSC’s Homecoming Parade will follow a new route, traveling east on 100 South, beginning at to 700 East, then turning right and finishing on the Dixie State campus at 300 South. Following the parade, the DSC Alumni Association and DSCSA will host a free tailgate party at the Wade Alumni House at 11 a.m., prior to Dixie State’s football game vs. Simon Fraser University, which is slated to kick off at 1 p.m. Game tickets may be purchased by calling the DSC general ticket office at 435-652-7800, or online at www.dixiestatetickets.com. Tickets may also be purchased at the box office at Hansen Stadium prior to kickoff.
Homecoming Week festivities wrap up Saturday night with the annual Alumni Homecoming Banquet at 6 p.m., in the Old Gym. Speaking at this year’s banquet will be DSC alum and former Major League Baseball pitcher Bruce Hurst (’67), while fellow alumni Paralee Miles Eckman (’54) and Edna Mae Sampson (’46) will be presented with Distinguished Alumni awards. In addition, for DSC baseball head coach Mike Littlewood will be given the Distinguished Service Award in honor of his 17 years as skipper of the Rebels and Red Storm. Following the Banquet, students, alumni and guests alike will be invited to dance the rest of the night away at the DSC Homecoming Masquerade Dance from 9 p.m.-midnight, at the Graff Performing Arts Building Plaza. Admission to the dance is free.
