(Fredonia, AZ) – For thousands of years local Native Americans weavers have used an incredible variety of materials, tools, and techniques to craft useful and beautiful items. The result is an amazing legacy of weaving. You are invited to experience this legacy through November 2012 at Pipe Spring National Monument.

Over Labor Day weekend (August 31 – September 2) rangers and volunteers will be demonstrating various native and pioneer weaving techniques. Programs include basket weaving, cradleboards, drop spindle, net and rope making, crochet, beading on a loom, rug making and others.

The Pipe Spring – Kaibab Band of Paiute Indians museum is also featuring “Weaving a Legacy” – a special exhibit that highlights the variety of Native American weaving tools, materials and products used through time. Made possible with museum collections from Pipe Spring National Monument, Zion National Park, Grand Canyon Parashant National Monument, the Bureau of Land Management, the Southern Utah University Archaeology Repository, the Kaibab Band of Paiute Indians and individual tribal members, this exhibit allows us to look into weaving’s past and present. “Weaving a Legacy” will be available for viewing through November 2012.
