(Hurricane, UT) - Several people were injured after an ambulance and a van collided on state Route 9 near 3400 West in Hurricane about 7:52 PM Saturday.

A Hildale/Colorado City Stand-up Medical Unit was transporting stroke victim, Ben Barlow, to the Dixie Regional Medical Center in St. George when it struck a van turning left at a green light, according to Utah Highway Patrol trooper Dan Altenes. Barlow suffered a laceration to the forehead and received stitches. The ambulance was operating with its siren and emergency lights. The emergency unit was carrying five crew members and the patient's wife Martha at the time of crash. The Emergency Medical Team included Dan Barlow, who suffered a dislocated shoulder, Micah Barlow who received a minor hip injury, Jesse Barlow who had a minor rib injury and Fawnetta Barlow. All other EMT's and the victims wife were treated and released at Dixie Regional Hospital, the UHP report said.

The van, driven by Christian Affolter of Switzerland, was carrying his wife, Daniela and two children, Nicola and Serena Affolter. The vehicle was struck on its side by the ambulance, which was traveling at approximately 60 mph. Serena, 8, sitting behind the van's driver, took the brunt of the impact to her door and suffered extremely critical injuries, according to Trooper Altenes. She was not breathing but had a pulse and was transported to Dixie Regional Hospital by ambulance where she was transported by Life Flight Helicopter to University Medical Center in Las Vegas. Sunday morning she was reported unconscious in critical condition. Both Daniela and Nicola were taken to Dixie Regional Medical were they were treated and released Sunday.

Ambulance Driver Lizzie Barlow was issued a citation for a traffic control signal violation (red light), according to UHP Trooper Altenes. (Utah code 41-6a-305)
