(Cedar City, UT) - The Southern Utah women’s basketball team has announced the signing of guard Ashleigh Munns of Essex, England. The British basketball product is expected to bring solid perimeter shooting to a talented Thunderbird backcourt.

“Ashleigh is going to be a fabulous addition to our program,” said SUU head coach JR Payne. “Not only is she an incredible 3-point shooter, but she is long and can really defend as well.”

Munns has been a member of the Sevenoaks Suns club team during the past four years, capturing titles in various age groupings and classification levels. In her final season with the U18 team she averaged 20.9 points and had a 40-point game.

Earlier this month Munns was invited to compete as a member of Great Britain’s national team in the FIBA Europe U18 Women European Championship B Division. The 5-9 guard demonstrated her shooting prowess by hitting six 3-pointers in a game played in Holland and then went on to win a 3-point shooting contest held at the tournament.

Munns becomes the team’s only international player, but will join incoming freshmen Basia Klein and Lori Parkinson as well as junior college transfers Marissa Robbins, Sofia Hepworth and Nicole Newbold to give the T-Birds a talented group of newcomers as they get set to compete in their first season in the Big Sky Conference.

“Being that Ashleigh has played on England's National team, she brings a level of experience that is rare on the collegiate level,” explained Payne. “We expect to be hearing a lot of, ‘Ashleigh for 3...’, in the Centrum throughout next season!”
