(St. George, UT) - A fatal vehicle crash near St. George killed two people and caused southbound traffic to be diverted Wednesday evening.

Utah Highway Patrol Corporal Todd Johnson said a pick-up drifted to the right while traveling southbound, over corrected and rolled twice in the median, catching fire at mile marker 12.5 outside of St. George.

James Gardner, 48 of West Jordan, and his six-year-old son, Darrell, were pronounced dead at the scene.

Johnson said that southbound traffic was diverted at mile-marker 13. The investigation is ongoing.

I just wanted to say thank you to all the people who tried their hardest to help out James and Darrell. They will be missed. It is sad when you lose a loved one, but to lose to at the same time, and for one to be so young. May God Bless their family and friends. And may God Bless all others out there. Again to all who tried to help, thank you very much and May God Bless you all. I'm James and Darrell's cousin.

We sprayed it with fire extinguishers. People were getting them from cars as they passed. I emptied the large one we had with us. It didn't do anything. A few of us got burned when a tire exploded. We had to back away then. It was over at that point.

It happened very quickly. There was nothing we could do. The emergency services arrived as fast as could be expected. There were dozens helping. And to everyone that tried or was gathering the extinguishers, Thank You for trying.

Bless this family. Your loved ones did not suffer long.
