(St. George, UT) – Most of the top seeded wrestlers proved their billing Friday afternoon and evening at the 3A South Division Regional wrestling tournament.

The wrestle-fest at Desert Hills High school will continue today with the semifinals getting under way at 10AM.

In the final 56 spots (14 weight divisions), Delta High school has 14 wrestlers showing in 11 divisions. The Rabbits had two six seeds and one seven seed (the highest appearance) break through to earn final four spots.

The Payson Lions were second in the tournament with six wrestlers earning spots in six divisions. Canyon View and Hurricane were next with five wrestlers apiece making the final four cuts.

The day kicks off with big time Region 9 matchups. In the 106-pound division, Hurricane’s Josh Pettus and Desert Hills’ Joe Mondragon face off on one side of the bracket. This is a must-see matchup.

Right after the Pettus-Mondragon battle, cross-town rivals from Cedar City go at it in the 113-pound division. Cedar’s Dusty Hone and Canyon View’s Kenny Lopez square off in a match that will be sure to make the large contingency of folks who came down from Iron County cheer loudly for their favorite grappler.

Another matchup of interest will be between Hurricane’s Zach Prince and Dixie’s Justin Crapo at 152 pounds. Prince is the favorite, but Crapo would make big noise with an upset.

A 220-pound finals matchup between Hurricane’s Brian Scott and Snow Canyon’s Curtis Bulloch is what many would like to watch, however, both have to go through another opponent first.

Make no mistake; there won’t be a bout not worth watching on Saturday. Most of the best stayed on track, and the few who did break past, showed some extra-determination in winning over a higher seeded opponent. They will have to reach back for that high effort again if they want to move past another high seed.
