By going 8-1-3 in Region 9 play, Cedar ended the eight-year run made by schools from St. George winning the region crown. Canyon View High, from Cedar City, was the last non-St. George school to win the region in 2002.
Ciara Robinson led the way for Cedar by recording two goals and Carly Stratton scored her 11th goal of the season for the Tigers.
Cedar coach Scott Kamachi has seen girls soccer develop in quality in Cedar and this year’s success at Cedar High is evidence in some way that the community’s soccer efforts are working.
“The kids are coming into high school much more prepared,” Kamachi said. “The club teams up here in Cedar help the kids play year round.
“All of that playing time they are getting is translating into better soccer players by the time they get to high school. We’ve always had great athletes, they just weren’t great soccer players. You have to play a lot to learn how to do the little things right.”
The 17-year coach at Cedar wanted to see another step taken from last year’s outcome, and his team did just that.
“I’m real proud of what the girls did,” Kamachi said. “It’s been building. Last season we won our first playoff game, and now we secured the region title. We’ve been watching these girls become better soccer players for a few years now.”
Kamachi is optimistic about hereafter as well about girls’ soccer in Cedar City.
“It looks real positive up here too,” Kamachi said. “What we see in the clubs, the girls after this group, are good players and it looks to be that way for the next five, six years.”
Cedar will now host Uintah High (9-7) on Wednesday at 4:00PM to start the 3A Girls’ Soccer State Championships.
IN OTHER REGION 9 ACTION:
The Snow Canyon Lady Warriors were merciless on the Thunder of Desert Hills in their 8-1 victory at home. Callie Stewart did more than a hat trick. She tallied four goals and assisted on two other Warriors’ goals. Arianna Weide, Cecilee Horlacher, Meghan McKenna, and Sarah Henderson all scored a goal for the Warriors as well.
Snow Canyon finished in second place in Region 9 and will host Park City (8-8-0) at 4:00PM on Wednesday.
Pine View and Dixie played to a 0-0 double overtime tie. Both teams had already secured playoff positions and their seeding was determined before the match.
The Panthers finished in third place in the region and qualified for postseason play for the ninth season in a row. Pine View will play at Wasatch High (9-6) on Wednesday at 4:00PM.
Dixie, the fourth place finisher in Region 9, qualified for the postseason for the first time since 2007. The Flyers will travel to Juan Diego on Wednesday and take on the Soaring Eagle (13-2-1) at 4:00PM.
