However, Pine View (3-0) rattled off 19 unanswered points before an Enterprise shot would fall through the net again and the Panthers would continue making distance between them and Enterprise on the scoreboard in the overwhelming 69-42 Pine View victory.
Pine View built a 36-15 halftime lead with help from junior center Cody Boyer’s eight points and four rebounds, in addition, nine players registered points for the Panthers’ team. The team was efficient in its first half shooting (13-of-22 field goals, 6-of-7 free throws) while Enterprise was far from (4-of-21 FG, 6-of-14 FT) accurate. In a 22-point second quarter by the Panthers, only four shots were off target (7-of-11 FG and 5-of-5 FT), including hitting all three three-point attempts.
Pine View Coach Darrell Larsen is happy with the progression the young Panthers’ team is making in the early preseason, but he also has to be a coach, and coaches don’t let teams get complacent.
“We have turned the ball over too much,” Larsen said. “That’s what I’ll show them in film sessions in practice.”
The Panthers stayed on task after halftime and scored 18 in the third quarter to Enterprise’s 15, making the score 54-30, on 7-of-11 field goal shooting. Pine View never let up and the 27-point win could be of some use later this week.
“We have good momentum going into a great tournament in Page,” Larsen said.
Asked about the challenge of a coach to keep a young crew from not letting their heads swell, Larsen said, “That’s a fine line. You want them to feel confidence, and they need to feel the good feeling of winning.
“I get after them in practice. I think that’s the best way to do it [keep them grounded and focused]. You have to get after them and point out where improvements are needed. You want them to feel good about what they’ve done, but you also need them to understand that they have much more to do.”
Cody Boyer led Pine View with 12 points. Jack Bangerter and Austin Gibbs pitched in 10 apiece and Christian Andersen and Kody Wilstead each had eight points.
Leading Enterprise was Brett Schill (13), and Dayce Truman and Morgun Phelps with nine each.
