(Toquerville, UT) - (UPDATED 10AM MAY 3) - According to Nick Howell

Toquerville Fire Information Officer, "Crews are back on the fire line this morning experiencing minimal fire behavior. The challenge for today is securing the perimeter located in steep, rocky terrain. The fire was accurately mapped Wednesday at 248 acres in size and is currently 75 percent contained. Down size in fire size is due to more accurate mapping". (UPDATED WITH VIDEO 4PM May 2) - The estimated 500-acre fire near Toquerville was reported as having decreased in its action Tuesday night. The fire location is Northeast of Toquerville, off Highway 17. It is believed to be human caused from burning debris.

Toquerville Fire Information Officer Nick Howell reported that firefighters are optimistic that good progress and more containment will be achieved Wednesday if favorable weather conditions exist. A GPS helicopter flight was planned for around 11:00AM Wednesday morning for analyzing an accurate fire size and establish detailed information of how to manage the fire efficiently and safely.

In Howell’s Wednesday morning report, he stated that no structures were lost and that no road closures had happened. An estimated 30 percent of the fire was contained using the assets which includes two helicopters, 13 fire engines, four hand crews, three water tenders and miscellaneous overhead. Agencies fighting the fire include the Hurricane, Leeds, Washington, St. George, and Hilldale Fire Departments, Bureau of Land Management, National Park Service, Forestry, Fire and State Lands, and the US Forest Service.

No evacuations were in place at the report time. Two firefighters suffered heat illness on Tuesday.
