(St. George, UT) – The Desert Hills Thunder boys’ basketball team demonstrated emphatically a claim to the Region 9 title Wednesday night in its 20-point win over visiting Hurricane.

The Thunder out-rebounded the Tigers 37-26 including snaring 12 offensive rebounds. Rebounding is a Tigers’ strength, but Desert Hills made sure they weren’t going to be out-worked in the paint.

Tyler Ott led Desert Hills with his 17 points (7 of 16 field goals) and was one of three Thunder players to register eight rebounds. Brandon Simister (10 points) and Josh Anderson complemented Ott with their eight boards apiece.

Jaden Beckstrand added 10 points and five rebounds as well. Colton Marshall led the Tigers with 14 points (7 of 12 fgs) and Boston Gubler had 12 points (seven rebounds).

The Tigers were hampered by shooting woes going 16 of 44 from the field (36 percent) while Desert Hills went 24 of 60 (40 percent).

Snow Canyon fought for its playoff life and won 60-55 over Dixie. The Warriors relied on the deep shot to seal the victory and kept their slight but more than a mirage chances alive to earn a playoff spot.

The Warriors hit 9 of 19 three-point field goal attempts to create the success formula. Brayden Linde led the way with 21 points and Gabe Jensen added 12.

Dixie’s Devin Bennett and Walker Swensen each scored 16 for the Flyers.

The behind-the-arc shooting by Snow Canyon erased elements of the game that Dixie had out performed in. The Flyers were 52 percent from the field (Snow Canyon was 33), which came from total ownership in the paint. Dixie scored 32 points to the Warriors 10 at close range, and muscled for more boards (Dixie 35 to 25).

But the long ball combined with much more free throws proved to overcome the inside presence of Dixie.

Snow Canyon was 17 of 25 from the free throw line and Dixie was 7 of 10.
