On Wednesday, July 30, 2014, our father Barlow Nelson White returned to the loving embrace of his Heavenly Father. Barlow was born on April 19, 1934 in Beaver, Utah. He attended school in Beaver and moved to Cedar City during high school where he graduated in 1952.

Barlow was a manager of Safeway stores, sold cars and insurance and was active in politics. He served as the mayor of Ely, Nevada from 1983 to 1987. One of his many accomplishments as mayor was helping to establish Great Basin National Park. He was the voice of the Ghost Train of Old Ely, riding the train 572 times to narrate the voyage. In 1997, he received the Volunteer of the Year Award from the Nevada Northern Railway.

Barlow was blessed with a beautiful voice and used that gift to sing in a quartet, many different choirs and several events. He had a love of the theatre and performed in various productions including Our Town and My Fair Lady. He inherited his love for cars from his father which led him to race and win the Silver State Classic Challenge in his 1972 Opel GT. He also loved outdoor activities such as skiing, running and bicycling.

Barlow had a testimony of and a great love for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He spent many hours the last four years of his life doing indexing for the church.

Barlow was preceded in death by his parents Burton Morgan White and Della Mary Nelson. He is survived by his brother Norman Nelson (Kay) White and his sisters Nora (David) Brown, MaryAnn (Jeff) Thompson, Barbara (Danny) Cowan and Debra (Jeff) Cowan. He is also survived by his children Christine (Joseph) Simmons, Victor (Kayleen) White, Burton (Julie) White, Kathryn (Thad) Smith, Steven (Evelyn) White, Della Rose (Robert) Hareland, and Elizabeth White. He has 20 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren, with three more on the way.

We will always remember that, “the “B” on the hill above Beaver stands for Barlow.”

Graveside services will be held on Friday August 1, 2014 @ 11:00 a.m. at the Mt. View Cemetery in Beaver, Utah, under the direction of Southern Utah Mortuary.
