She was born May 21, 1924, in Oak City, Utah to Reed and Zella Neilson Lovell. She graduated from Delta High School. She attended Brigham Young University and graduated from Utah State.
She married Don F. Schmutz on September 29, 1951, in the St. George Temple. They had six children, Wilford Reed (deceased), Merri Lee, Becky, Neil, Sherry, and Susan. She was a school teacher for over 20 years, most of that was as a Kindergarten teacher at East Elementary in St. George.
She loved to travel. She and Don enjoyed many trips together. After Don passed away, she continued to travel with her cousins, friends, and her daughters and their families.
Merlene was an excellent cook making brownies, cinnamon rolls, cookies, bread and other goodies for her family, friends and neighbors. She is most famous for her raspberry jam.
Merlene was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She served in many callings, but mostly the MIA and Primary Organizations. She also served in the temple.
In their later years, she and Don served a mission in the California San Fernando Mission. This was an enjoyable experience for her.
She is survived by: Merri Lee and Terrell Colvin of Enterprise, Becky and Kim Hafen of Washington, Neil and Cathy Schmutz of Oak City, Sherry and Scott Truman of Enterprise, Susan and Karl Ashby of Washington. A brother, Merton (Lael) Lovell of St. George and a sister-in-law, Venice Lovell of Oak City, She is preceded in death by her husband, Don F. Schmutz, her parents, and brothers, Dan, Neil and Bruce.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, July 17, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. at the Washington Main Street Chapel, 82 N. Main, Washington, UT. Visitations will be held Wednesday, July 16, 2014 at Spilsbury Mortuary from 6:00-8:00 p.m. and again prior to the funeral from 9:00-10:30 a.m. Interment will be in the St. George City Cemetery.
