(ST. GEORGE, Utah) - (+VIDEO) The new school year is about to begin and parents can have a large impact on their children by talking to them about the dangers of using drugs or alcohol. There are many resources to help parents, educators and neighbors for approaching this subject with young people at the Southwest Prevention website.

Logan Reid is the Prevention Specialist & Research Coordinator for Southwest and his job is to reduce and prevent substance abuse in our community. The center provides trained specialists with programs to assist in the Washington or Iron County School Districts.

Reid said that getting involved in the lives of our youth helps protect them from the risks of drug or alcohol abuse. He encourages the community to allow representatives from his staff to help educate church groups, business or service groups, even book clubs. The Washington and Iron County Prevention Coalitions are another place for volunteers to get involved in educating the public on the impact drug abuse has on our communities.
