(FERRON, Utah) - You can get up close and personal with as many as five species of bats at a special “Meet the Bats Night” in southeastern Utah.

The Division of Wildlife Resources will host the free event on July 26. It will take place at the Ferron Canyon Picnic Area. The area is just above Millsite State Park. It takes about 20 minutes to drive to the area from Ferron.

The event starts around 8:30 p.m. “It will continue well past midnight,” says DWR Regional Conservation Outreach Manager Brent Stettler, “but you’re welcome to leave at any time.”

Stettler says the event isn’t suitable for pets or young children. It’s limited to 25 people, and preregistration is required. To register, or for more information, call Stettler at 435-613-3707.

That night, Stettler says biologists will catch bats in a fine mesh net. After catching a bat, they’ll remove it from the net and collect biological data. “During this time,” he says, “you can get as close to the bat as you want.”

Biologists will show you how to identify each species and will answer any questions you have. “There will be ample opportunity to take pictures and examine each bat closely,” Stettler says.

The last time biologists trapped bats in Ferron Canyon was in 2012. They caught 10 bats, representing five different species. These included the Yuma myotis, little brown bat, big-eared myotis, big brown bat and silver-haired bat.

Stettler says camping is available at Millsite State Park. Camping is not available in Ferron Canyon, however, due to a flash flood risk.

A vault toilet is onsite at the picnic area.
