(IVINS, Utah) - Kayenta Arts Foundation is proud to present Poetry Under The Stars 4 – an evening of performance poetry. The public is invited to enjoy a group of remarkable Utah poets “perform” their own poetry on stage. For the first time ever, Southern Utah will be represented by a team of local poets who will compete in the 2014 National Poetry Slam in Oakland, CA, August 5 – 9. Hundreds of premier performance poets from North America and Europe convene that week in Oakland for the competition, but Southern Utah residents will have an opportunity to enjoy and support their poet representatives by attending a local performance event here on July 13 at 8pm at the Kayenta Outdoor Theatre (875 Coyote Gulch Court) in Ivins. Tickets are $15 and can be purchased online at www.manoftwoworlds.com or by phone: 435-652-8318.

Garry Morris, Kayenta Arts Foundation’s Co-Artistic Director, is a big fan of the Poetry nights: “This annual event is always a huge success and always sold out. Each poet shares their very personal interpretations of their own original poetry. All the poets have different styles that represent the unique multiculturalism of our southwestern region. We’re especially excited this year because we have an opportunity to support a local slam team. To help defray transportation and hotel costs, KAF is donating half of the night’s proceeds to the team. The other half benefits KAF’s new Kayenta Center for the Arts.”

This year’s poets include: Ron Coulson, Darren M. Edwards, Gina Grissom, Erika Larsen and Whitney Shurtleff. All of the poets have performed locally and are extremely talented, bringing their own singular voice to share with the community. “If you’ve never attended a performance poetry event before you’re missing something very special,” assures Morris. “It’s the perfect confluence of poetry and theatre. Just like good theatre, performance poetry not only entertains, but also touches your heart, opens your mind and reaches into your soul.”

Kayenta Arts Foundation is a 501 (c) (3) tax-exempt charitable organization whose mission is “to develop and create an environment that fosters diverse artistic endeavors for educational and enrichment purposes.” Poetry Under The Stars 4 is supported in part by Utah Arts & Museums, with funding from the State of Utah and the National Endowment for the Arts.

Tables will be set up so that everyone can sit back, eat, relax and be drawn into the world of the performing artists. Bring a picnic along and make an evening of it!

Due to adult content and adult language this event is recommended for mature audiences only.
