(CEDAR CITY, Utah) - The inspirational power of Southern Utah’s wilderness areas has long provided artists with a creative spark that they have captured in a variety of medium. Now the staff of Southern Utah University’s Braithwaite Fine Arts Gallery invites regional artists to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of the Wilderness Act of 1964, a landmark of U.S. legislation that began to recognize the unique nature of pristine landscapes in the United States. The staffs of SUU’s Harry Reid Outdoor Engagement Center and the Gallery are collaborating on Wild Perspectives: Celebrating the 50th Anniversary of the Wilderness Act, a special juried exhibition of 2D artwork focusing on Southern Utah’s wilderness areas. The exhibition will be displayed in the Hunter Conference Center from November 3, 2014-January 31, 2015. Information about submissions can be obtained by calling the Braithwaite Fine Arts Gallery at 435-586-5432 (Tue-Sat, noon-7pm) or visiting www.suu.edu/pva/artgallery.

To be considered for the exhibition, all artwork must be of a Southern Utah wilderness area. The selection committee is looking for works that emphasize the importance of preserving and protecting our wilderness areas. With this exhibition, artists have a chance to explore these wilderness areas and celebrate the Wilderness Act through the creation of their own artwork that shares appreciation and inspiration from these unique landscapes.

Artists residing in the western region of the United States are invited to apply. This exhibit is open to 2D artwork (including painting, printmaking, photography*, drawing, illustration, and graphic design); all artwork must be gallery ready. A maximum of three images may be entered per artist. Entries must be submitted electronically to suma@suu.edu no later than midnight on October 3, 2014. All artists submitting to this exhibition will be notified of accepted work via email by October 13, 2014. * Note that most public land requires a film permit for videography and photography used for commercial purposes.

Artists are requested to include all of the following in their entry:

    • Contact information: Name, Address, Phone, Email

    • Up to three images (.jpeg or .pdf format)
