    (MAPLETON, Utah) – Dorothy Adelle Whitaker, 89, passed away June 3, 2014 in Mapleton, Utah at her home surrounded by family. She was born August 19, 1924 to Robert Watson and Mary Williams Bowman at the LDS Hospital in Salt Lake City, Utah. She was the second of three children.

    Her family moved from Salt Lake City to Southern California before the war where she enjoyed the weather, the beach, and her involvement in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She loved attending Huntington Park High School. She met the love of her life, David Owen Whitaker, at a church horseback riding outing. They were married after a six month courtship in Phoenix, Arizona, January 17, 1947, by a Mormon Bishop. They were sealed in October 1948 in the Mesa Arizona LDS Temple.

    She and her husband raised their children and ran their construction business in the San Clemente, California area. She also worked for Capistrano Unified School district for ten years as a secretary. In 1978 the family moved to Utah. She continued to enjoy her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She and Owen served many years as temple workers at the St. George Utah Temple. Her beloved husband died October 30, 1995 after 48 years of marriage. She served as a Church Service Missionary in the Member Locator Department.

    She is survived by her brother, Robert Bowman of St. George, Utah; her three children: David A. Whitaker from Las Vegas Nevada, Joan L. Sanderson from Palm Springs California and Bradley O. Whitaker from Mapleton Utah; fifteen grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren.

    She was preceded in death by her parents; her older sister, Jean Bowman Derry; and her husband, Owen. Funeral Services will be held on Monday, June 16, 2014 at 12:00 p.m. at the St. James LDS Chapel, 1095 East St. James Lane, St. George Utah, 84790. Interment will be in the St. George City Cemetery, St. George Utah.
