  • DSU Football Adds Five to 2014 Signing Class

    (ST. GEORGE, Utah) – Head coach Scott Brumfield announced the addition of five players to the 2014 Dixie State football signing class. The quintet includes two high school players from the state of Utah, one prep from California, and a pair of junior college transfers from the Golden State.

    Brumfield and the coaching staff focused heavily on the offensive side of the football with primary emphasis on the line. Three of the signees will bolster an improved front of returning veterans and youth vying for starting roles. The Red Storm also inked one wide receiver and a local defensive back.

    Gunnar Gustin - WR

    6-3, 190

    Salem Hills High School – Salem, UT

    Gustin had 49 catches for 904 yards while hauling in 17 touchdowns under coach Joel Higginson. Gunnar is a three-sport athlete for the Skyhawks, excelling in basketball and baseball as well as football. Gustin is the 17th-ranked player in the state of Utah by MaxPreps.

    Brumfield on Gustin: "We are very fortunate to have Gunnar join Dixie State. He is a tall receiver that always makes plays. We felt like Gunnar kind of flew under the radar. We are fortunate to have him and look for big things in the future."

    Braden Reber - DB

    6-0, 190

    Desert Hills High School - St. George, UT

    Reber had a great senior season under head coach Carl Franke, leading Desert Hills to its first football State Championship. Braden was a First Team All State selection as well as first team All-Region 9. He accumulated 37 tackles and six interceptions for the Thunder. Reber ranks as the 16th-best player in Utah by MaxPreps.

    Brumfield on Reber: "We felt like Braden was one of the top athletes in southern Utah. Braden is an outstanding athlete that will have an impact for our team. We look for big things from Braden."

    Zachery Taves - OL

    6-4, 280

    Cerritos Junior College/Millikan - Long Beach, CA

    Taves originally signed with the University of Montana before transferring to Cerritos. Zachery had an outstanding sophomore season for the Falcons for Frank Mazzotta.

    Brumfield on taves: "He will bring much needed experience to the Red Storm offensive line. He is a very athletic big guy that has the ability to be an anchor for our offense."

    Dixxon Diaz - OL

    6-3, 310

    Cerritos Junior College/Norwalk – Norwalk, CA

    Diaz was a two-year starter for the Falcons under longtime coach Frank Mazzotta. Dixxon had a great high school career at Norwalk HS before playing at Cerritos.

    Brumfield on Diaz: "Dixxon will bring great leadership and experience to our offensive line. He has tremendous footwork and is very aggressive. Dixxon will have an immediate impact for our offense. He will join teammate Zachary Taves in bringing much needed experience to our offensive line."

    Darien Haratyk - OL

    6-4, 275

    Santiago High School – Corona, CA

    Haratyk was a two-year starter and team captain for Santiago High School in Corona for Jeff Steinberg. He was the 80th-ranked high school player in California by MaxPreps.

    Brumfield on Haratyk: "Young athletic offensive lineman was our focus during our recruiting process, and we feel Darien was that guy. He has a passion for football, and will develop into a very good player. We look for big things from Darien in the future."
