(SALT LAKE CITY, Utah) - Man’s best friend continues to torment letter carriers. Last year 27 Utah letter carriers were needlessly bitten by dogs while delivering the mail. Eight of the bites resulted in medical attention beyond first-aid, and six cases resulted in letter carriers being unable to return to their normal duties for a period of time. The dog bites ranged from a scratch to a bite that required several stitches to close. A total of 26 Utah letter carriers were bitten in 2012. Nationwide last year 5,581 letter carriers were attacked by dogs, including 11 in the Salt Lake City area, ranking the city 30th nationally along with Santa Ana, CA, Des Moines, IA, and Richmond, VA. Houston topped the list with 63 dog attacks in 2013.

“We’re asking pet owners to restrain their dogs and allow their letter carriers to deliver the mail safely,” said USPS District Manager Jimmy Wolf. “We can’t control people’s dogs; only dog owners can do that. We take the safety of our employees very seriously. We will not wait until a carrier is bitten before taking preventative action.”

While 5,581 letter carriers were attacked last year, that number pales in comparison to the 4.5 million Americans annually bitten by dogs — half of whom are children — according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The U.S. Postal Service, the medical community, veterinarians and the insurance industry are working together to educate the public that dog bites are avoidable by declaring May 18-24 as National Dog Bite Prevention Week.

Wolf encourages the news media to share the following tips when reporting on this critical issue.

If a letter carrier delivers a certified letter or a package to your front door, place your dog into a separate room and close the door before opening the front door. Dogs have been known to burst through screen doors or plate-glass windows to get at strangers.

Dog owners should remind their children about the need to keep the family dog secured. Parents should remind their children not to take mail directly from letter carriers in the presence of the family pet as the dog may see handing mail to a child as a threatening gesture.

The Postal Service places the safety of its employees as a top priority. If a letter carrier feels threatened by a vicious dog or if a dog is running loose, the owner may be asked to pick up the mail at the Post Office until the carrier is assured the pet has been restrained. If the dog is roaming the neighborhood, the pet owner’s neighbors may be asked to pick up their mail at the Post Office as well.

This article is clearly a piece of self-serving propaganda created only to cover up the actions of SLCPD who murdered the dog Geist in his own fenced-in yard. Joseph Goebbels would be so proud of you. #JusticeForGeist
