(WASHINGTON, D.C.) - U.S. Senator Orrin Hatch (R-Utah), issued the following statement today regarding the controversy related to recent Bureau of Land Management law enforcement action in western states and urged the public and the Bureau to strive to avoid conflict.

“As a federal land management agency, it is the responsibility of the Bureau to manage lands for multiple use. BLM should work cooperatively with state and local law enforcement to protect the public when they visit public lands. It is discouraging to see the recent trend towards the use of force in emotional situations surrounding public land management. I was relieved that there were no serious injuries in Bunkerville, Nevada last month and in that same regard, I would urge that when the public uses the public land to strive to do so in a peaceful manner. I also encourage the BLM to make timely decisions regarding disputes in order to show elected officials and citizens that they are willing to work cooperatively with the public.”
