(ST.GEORGE, Utah) - The Washington County School District is pleased to announce the selection of Suraj Syal as the Director of Special Education. Mr. Syal will replace Karen Bess as the interim Special Education Director.

In 1971, Suraj immigrated from Punjab, India to the United States as a first grader. He attended public schools in Michigan, Ontario, Canada, and in Northeast Ohio.

In 1983 he attended Brigham Young University. While at BYU, he performed with the Ballroom Dance Tour Team and taught social dance.

Prior to graduating from BYU in 1992, he was hired as a mild/moderate special education intern in Provo City School District. During his 12-year career in the District, he was employed as a special education teacher, a technology specialist, an educational specialist, and an elementary special education coordinator.

In June 2003, Suraj joined the Utah Personnel Development Center (UPDC) in Salt Lake City as a program specialist. He provided professional development support and technical assistance to all Utah school districts and charter schools. He completed a M.S. degree in Special Education from BYU in 2004 and an ESL endorsement from Southern Utah University in 2008.

Since May of 2009, Suraj has been serving as the UPDC coordinator over statewide professional development.
