Startup Weekend Returns to Cedar City
(CEDAR CITY, Utah) - Entrepreneurs skilled in business development, computer software, and graphic design are invited to participate in the second annual Startup Weekend Cedar City on April 10–12, 2014. Startup Weekend is an event in which business ideas are developed, pitched, and launched, in a whirlwind 54 hour event. The Vivint Hub at 246 East Fiddlers Canyon Drive in Cedar City will again host Startup Weekend Cedar City beginning Thursday evening April 10 at 6 PM and continuing until 9 PM on Saturday, April 12. Online registration is available at: http://cedarcity.startupweekend.org/. Registration for Startup Weekend Cedar City is $99 per person and includes free meals throughout the event.

Lead organizer for Startup Weekend Cedar City, Todd Hess, of RedPoint Associates in Cedar City says, "Last year's event drew more than fifty participating entrepreneurs along with judges, expert coaches, and many spectators. This year's Startup Weekend will be even bigger and better."

Startup Weekend events are held throughout the world and are supported by a grant from the Kauffman Foundation, along with other sponsors such as Google for Entrepreneurs, Amazon Web Services, Sprint, 3M's Post-It and Coca-Cola. These global partners offer 'free stuff', such as 'cloud computing'--and Post-Its. Local sponsors for Startup Weekend Cedar City include Southern Applied Technology College, Kunzler Law Group, Vivint, and Se7encreative.

At Startup Weekend, as many as a hundred experienced and aspiring entrepreneurs, computer programmers, graphic designers, and business developers, will assemble in one large room and form about a dozen new companies. Each company, with the help of expert coaches, will produce a completed, market-validated product in one 54-hour weekend. Each company then will present its accomplishments to a team of expert judges.

Teams are judged according to the following three criteria, weighed equally: Business Model, Customer Validation, and Execution. More importantly, all participants keep what they create; many have continued their startup company after Startup Weekend, and some have obtained significant funding from investors. Cedar City resident Abraham Hunt, who works full-time as a software developer, has been on startups that have finished in the top three at numerous Startup Weekends around Utah in the past year. Hunt states, "Startup Weekend enables me to advance my professional practice alongside seasoned pros and ambitious newcomers."
