SUU opened up a three-run lead against the Aggies in the top of the third when Kadi Henderson drove in Kelli Hales and Terysa Dyer followed with an RBI single to score two more.
Freshman catcher Sydney Hart led off the fourth inning with a solo shot for USU, but Southern Utah scored again in the sixth as Jordan Theurer reached home on an error to set the final count at 4-1.
Theurer (5-5) also got the start in the circle for the Thunderbirds, where she struck out four batters over four innings and allowed just one run. Katie Greenberg tossed the final three frames without surrendering a hit. Abby Indreland (1-2) took the loss after giving up three unearned runs in three innings of work.
Henderson recorded her fourth double of the season in the game while Kylee Wolf went 2-for-4 at the plate and scored a run.
It was Oregon that claimed the advantage in the day’s second contest after Janie Takeda singled to center field to score the game’s opening run in the first inning. It added three more in the second with a pair of homers from Kailee Cuico and Sammie Puentes to jump out in front, 4-0.
Oregon came up with four more scores in the fourth, and then held off SUU to clinch the 8-0 win.
Ariel Hart (2-6) was charged with all eight runs, three of which were unearned, after throwing 3.2 innings. Ashley Ostler recorded the final four outs for the T-Birds and Karissa Hovinga (9-1) tossed a complete game shutout for the Ducks.
Junior Sara Park, Wolf, Henderson and Dyer accounted for the Thunderbirds’ four hits in the contest. Puentes went 2-3 at the plate with three RBI, a home run and a double for Oregon.
SUU resumes Big Sky Conference play this weekend with a three-game series at Sacramento State.
