“Arts*Lab is growing,” states program director and CCAC director of education Denise Purvis. “We began with workshops for elementary children, but our program was so popular that the Arts Council asked me to expand the program for older participants.” The workshop on April 12 will be facilitated by professional arts educators. Emily Hepworth, Manager of the Orchestra of Southern Utah will teach music, while Denise Purvis, Assistant Professor of Dance at SUU will explore dance. Alisa Petersen, Visual Art Specialist for Iron County Schools, will teach art, while Jess Phillips, senior theatre education major at SUU will lead the theatre class.
The focus of all classes is rhythm and pattern, which provides many artistic avenues for students to learn and create. At the end of the workshop, parents and participants are invited to remain for about 15 minutes to enjoy a sharing of the students’ art.
“We really look forward to working with an older population this time. Our focus on the creative process, rather than a product, is very important for budding artists, and we can’t wait to share our art forms with a new group of students,” explains Purvis.
Students may register online at cedarcityartscouncil.org. Class size is limited, so please sign up as soon as possible. Further questions may be directed to Purvis at 435-865-8024.
