  • Holt Fifth, T-Birds Fifth After Day-Two At Desert Shootout

    (GOOODYEAR, AZ) - Southern Utah’s Jake Holt was tied for fifth place and Southern Utah was in seventh after two rounds at Kansas State’s 15-team Desert Shootout. The tournament is being played at the par 72, 7,015-yard Palm Valley Country Club.

    Holt followed Thursday’s round of 67 with a 70 on Friday to come in at 7-under par 137 and in a tie for fifth place, while teammates Nic Booth (68-74) and Sammy Cole (71-71) were tied for 24th at 2-under 142. SUU’s Tim Leonard was 39th at 145 with Taylor Schone 52nd at 147 heading into Saturday’s final round, and the Thunderbirds’ Jameson Keiley, playing as an individual, was tied for 85th at 156.

    Holt was six shots off the pace of Grand Canyon’s Mark Geddes – who fired a round of 64 on Friday to come in at 13-under par 131 – but just three shots out of fourth place.

    Southern Utah, which held the lead after an opening-round 279, shot 287 on Friday to sit at 10-under par 566 and tied with Long Beach State in seventh, just 11 shots behind second-round leader Cal State Fullerton, which was at 21-under 555 after Friday’s round of 274.

    UMKC and Idaho were tied in second at 559, followed by Brigham Young (560), Grand Canyon (563), Kansas State (564), SUU and Long Beach. Nebraska (567) was one shot behind the Thunderbirds and 49ers, followed by Kansas (569), with Drake and Northern Iowa tied in 11th at 574. Columbia (589) was 13th with Bowling Green and Creighton tied for 14th at 598.
