(CEDAR CITY, Utah) - Southern Utah University, Cedar City, Utah: SUU Opera presents a wildly diverse and hilarious triple-bill featuring two comic operas and some classic songs from the musical theatre. Featuring stage direction by Carol Ann Modesitt, performances run March 19-22, at 7:30 pm in the intimate Thorley Recital Hall in the SUU Music Building. General admission tickets are $10 for adults, $8 for SUU Faculty and Staff, and $5 for children. SUU Students are free with a valid student I.D. This is a Music Masterworks Series event produced by SUU's Department of Music.

There Is Nothing Like a Dame showcases selections from the Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein songbook including scenes from Carousel and The Sound of Music as well as their lesser known Me and Juliet. Performers for the Rodgers and Hammerstein sequence include Amanda Brooks, Madi Davis, Rebecca Dayley, Hannah Fontes, Melissa Rebman and Jocelyn Taylor. Ashley Evans serves as accompanist.

The wildly funny Sweet Betsy from Pike A Horse Opera with book, music and lyrics by Mark Bucci is a fun musical ride, inspired by a popular folk song. This witty retelling of the wild and woolly west employs a variety of classic opera devices. The tale centers on the put-upon Betsy and Ike who face hardships and challenges as they cross the prairie. The 25-minute one act premiered in 1957. The cast includes Emilee Hales as the Narrator, Janese Shaw as Betsy and Jordan Sanders as Ike. Dr. Willem van Schalkwyk serves as both vocal and music director for the piece.

The evening concludes with a unique "Half Opera" devised by the ingeniously funny mind of P.D.Q. Bach (Peter Schickele). The Stoned Guest is parody of classical opera that combines elements of Don Giovanni and Carmen. The ensemble features Christina Meikle as Donna Ribalda, Sara Thorson as Carmen Ghia, Jordan Sanders as Don Octave, Madi Davis as a Friendly Saint Bernard, Hannah Fontes as Il Commendatoreador and Scott Moxon as the Stage Hand. The score is performed by Dr. Christian Bohnenstengel on harpsichord and mandolin, Dr. Virginia Stitt on woodwinds and Krystal Hanson on piano.
