(SAN JOSE, CA) - Southern Utah University gymnastics scored a school-record 49.200 on bars en route to a season-high 195.925 in its victory at San Jose State on Friday night. The Spartans scored a 195.775 in the defeat as the Thunderbirds captured individual titles on vault, bars and in the all-around.

SUU started strong with its performance on bars as all five scoring gymnastics recorded a 9.825 or higher during their routines. Freshman Danielle Ramirez led the way with a 9.875, capturing her first uneven bar title this season and was followed by a 9.850 from fellow freshman Memory Shettles. A trio of 9.825's from Jamie Armijo, Rochelle Bernier and Alyssa Click rounded out the team score.

Southern Utah opened a six-tenth lead over SJSU after the first rotation as the Spartans scored a 48.600 on vault. However, the Thunderbirds didn't fare much better on vault during their second rotation, scoring a 48.700.

Ramirez scored a 9.800 on the event to lead the Thunderbirds, capturing her second individual title of the competition. She was followed by matching 9.775's from Shettles and Brittney Jensen and two 9.675's from Bernier and Tyly Bozzuto.

SUU's lead was trimmed to just a single tenth as San Jose State matched the Thunderbird's 49.200 on bars, putting the team scores at 97.900-97.800.

Southern Utah created some separation in the third rotation, scoring just off a season high on floor (49.125) with a 49.100 on the event. Shettles was tops on the team with a 9.850 as Carly Sigler and Ana Jaworski were just behind with 9.825's. A pair of 9.800's from Bozzuto and Natalie Trejo punctuated the Thunderbirds' scoring.

San Jose State wrapped up its rotation on beam, scoring a 48.775 to give the Thunderbirds a 147.000-146.575 advantage. The Spartans finished the meet strong with a 49.200 on floor, including a pair of 9.900's, but it wasn't enough to catch the T-Birds.

Southern Utah claimed the victory by hitting 6-of-6 routines on the balance beam, highlighted by a 9.825 by senior leader Alyssa Click. Bozzuto, Jaworski, Shettles and Stacie Webb each scored a 9.775 to give the Thunderbirds a 48.925 on the event and give the visitors the 195.925 road victory.

Shettles finished the meet as the all-around champion, her first all-around title of the year, scoring a career-high 39.250.

The win will likely push the Thunderbirds higher in the rankings on Monday as SUU will now count its previous season high of 195.700 towards its regional qualifying score.

Southern Utah will be off next weekend before returning to the competition floor at Utah State on March 14.
