Kody Christoffersen (Ogden, UT) took the hill for the Red Storm and delivered three solid innings of work before the Lancers (15-2, 1-2 PacWest) struck for five runs in the fourth inning.
Dixie State (5-9, 2-1 PacWest) grabbed an early lead after Kevin Kline (Las Vegas, NV) homered to left field in the first inning and Yuto Kata (Chiba, Japan) executed a sacrifice bunt in the second inning to plate Dalton Gust (Riverton, UT).
In the fifth inning, the Storm knotted the game at 5-5 with a two-out, two-run single by Tyler Blair (Henderson, NV).
CBU scored a single run on a sacrifice fly in the sixth inning off Kevin Dorantes (Las Vegas, NV). It would be the only run the DSU reliever allowed.
Kline doubled and Blair walked with one out in the seventh inning, setting up Kris Kaplan (Las Vegas, NV). His two-run double allowed Dixie State to grab the lead at 6-5. Trey Kamachi (Kapolei, HI), in a pinch hitting role, lined an RBI single and advanced to third on an error. Gust laid down another sacrifice bunt to bring Kamachi home to close out a four-run frame.
Dorantes worked 2.2 innings, allowing four hits. Matt Hill (Cypress, CA) offered a lead off single to the Lancers in the eighth, but retired the next three in order. Evan Parker (Ogden, UT) worked the ninth and struck out one to seal the victory.
Kline, Blair and Kaplan (the four, five and six hitter) combined to go 7-for-14 with five runs and 6 RBIs in the opening victory.
Josh Farrell was tagged with the loss for the Lancers after allowing two runs in 1.1 innings of work. Four CBU players had multi-hit games to lead the offense.
Bronson Anderson (Lehi, UT) got the start the Red Storm and threw 5.2 quality innings, despite allowing two unearned runs.
The Lancers broke a scoreless tie in the third inning after Blair committed an error at first.
Dixie State cut the lead in half in the next half inning after Kaplan and Donald Glover (Las Vegas, NV) executed a double steal of home and second base respectively.
Blair continued to swing a heavy bat, launching the second pitch in the top of the sixth inning over the wall in right field for a solo home run to tie the game at 2-2.
Hill and Taylor Stone cut down CBU opportunities late in regulation innings to send the league game in extra frames.
Kata led off the DSU eighth inning with a walk. Blair and Glover also earned walks to load the bases. Against the third Lancer pitcher of the frame, Kamachi singled through the left side of the infield to plate Kata and Blair for a 4-2 lead.
Parker made his second appearance of the day and shut the door after surrendering one hit for his fourth save. Stone (1-1) earned the win throwing three pitches and inducing a ground out.
Adam Hofacket took the loss after 7.2 innings of four-run, six-hit baseball.
The teams return to action Friday at noon Pacific (1 p.m. Mountain) in the final game of the four-game series.
