Dr. Wangsgard has been involved in numerous sports at almost every possible level; capturing a Big Sky Championship in tennis, playing NCAA Division I basketball, competing and coaching in intercollegiate and professional cycling and serving as a snowboard instructor at Snow Basin Ski resort. She is now a Professor of Special Education at Southern Utah University and has published research in various fields including literacy, behavior management and mild/moderate disabilities.
Susie Pedersen has been an avid T-Bird fan since her days as a three-sport athlete at SUU, earning recognition as an all-conference softball and basketball player while also competing with the volleyball team. She continued her professional career in the Cedar City community and has remained a dedicated follower of Thunderbird Athletics. In 2012 Pedersen was inducted into the Athletics Hall of Fame. She can always be found at the games and is involved with the department’s fundraising efforts as a board member of the Thunderbird Club. Pedersen will be the recipient of the Thunderbird Enthusiast Award for her
Joy Peterson came to Southern Utah University in 1976 as an educator and a coach. She taught such subjects as physical education, sports officiating, fundamentals of sports, techniques of teaching, fitness for life, and weight training. Peterson simultaneously coached the volleyball, basketball and softball teams, and led all three programs to conference championships. She entered the SUU Hall of Fame alongside Pedersen and was inducted into the Utah Sports Officials Hall of Honor in 2006. Peterson will be named the recipient of the Thunderbird Legacy Award for her countless contributions to the furthering of women’s athletics.
