Juanita Charlotte Shepard Wallace passed from this world after a long struggle with Alzheimer’s on January 29, 2014 at the age of 88.

Juanita was born October 13, 1925 in Altus, OK to Walter and Dorothy Syvella Smith Shepard. She was the youngest of five children (Joel Neanion, deceased; Murel Roland, deceased; Jettie Roberta; Avahlene Melodies, deceased) for 13 years until her sister Nancy Barbara Marie was born.

The family moved to the Hemet/San Jacinto Valley where Juanita attended San Jacinto High School and became the first of her siblings to graduate, cap and gown.

Juanita had been living in the Los Angeles area where she met her husband, Franklin O’Keith Wallace. They were married in Las Vegas, NV on December 21, 1946. Keith worked in the airline industry and they stayed in the Southern California area for most of their married life.

They were unable to have children of their own, but opened their home to many four-legged children who they loved very much. Juanita and Keith would travel, go golfing and take long rides in the country, often going out to the desert with their guns for target practice. One time it became dark very quickly and they couldn’t see their way back to their car. Keith told their shepherd, King, to take them to the car, which he promptly did and they found little Sigfreid their dachshund that they thought had been lost, waiting at the car ahead of them.

Keith passed away while they were living in Georgia and Juanita moved back to Southern California to be close to family. She enjoyed music, bowling, gardening, poetry, reading, especially her beloved Harry Potter books (she wouldn’t read the sad parts) and decorating cakes for friends and loved ones.

She moved to Cedar City, UT in 2009 from Highland Palms Mobile Home Park in Homeland, CA to live with her sister Nancy. In January 2013, she contracted pneumonia and moved into Emerald Pointe after she was well. She was well loved by all and will be missed.

We would like to thank all of the CNAs, past and present, who took such loving care of Juanita and the staff at Emerald Point for their support and many kindnesses. They have all become honorary family members.

There will be a Graveside Service at 2:00 pm on Tuesday, February, 4, 2014 at the Cedar City Cemetery under the direction of Southern Utah Mortuary. A viewing will be held prior at 1:00 pm at Southern Utah Mortuary (190 North 300 West, Cedar City, Utah).
