GCU put up six runs on six hits in the third inning to jump in front 6-0. The ‘Lopes recorded thee straight singles to plate the first score of the game before Stephanie Pesqueira drove a grand slam over the left field wall to stretch the margin to five. Haley Walker rounded out the scoring with an infield RBI single.
SUU got on the board with a leadoff home run from Kadi Henderson in the following frame as the senior infielder became the second T-Bird to leave the park in as many days. Grand Canyon got the score back with back-to-back doubles to open the fifth inning to extend its lead to 7-1.
The Thunderbirds had a chance at a rally in the sixth after the first three batters all got on base. SUU would plate two runs on as junior catcher Lyndsey Healey drove in Henderson and Resley reached home on an error. The Antelopes got out of the inning leading 7-3 however and held Southern Utah scoreless in the their last turn at bat to come away with the win.
Pesqueira (1-2) earned the win after allowing just one run over five innings while striking out four. Katie Greenberg (0-2) got the start for the T-Birds and gave up five runs before being replaced in the circle by Ariel Hart in the third. Freshman Jordan Theurer threw the final three frames for SUU, recording five strikeouts and allowing just one earned run.
Senior Meagan Neilson singled in the third to record a hit in her fourth-straight game, while Healey and Kelli Hales each picked up their first RBI of the year.
Southern Utah continues tournament play at the Fresno State Kick-Off next weekend where it will take on UC Santa Barbara and the Bulldogs this Saturday followed by a meeting with UC Riverside on Sunday. Coverage of Thunderbird softball is available online at www.suutbirds.com.
