SUU opened on bars and were led by a trio of 9.800-plus scores, headlined by Alyssa Click's 9.850. She was followed by a pair of season-high 9.800's from Rochelle Bernier and Danielle Ramirez with the trio finishing tied for third and sixth, respectively. Jamie Armijo and Memory Shettles rounded out the season-high team score of 48.925 with a 9.750 and 9.725, respectively.
Denver led the meet after the first rotation, scoring a 49.100 on vault and NC State was in third after a 48.150 on beam, where the Wolfpack had to count a fall.
Southern Utah moved to beam and captured its only individual title on the night as Shettles scored a season-high tying 9.850 to win the event. The rest of the Thunderbirds' season-high 48.875 came from two 9.775's from Stacie Webb and Ana Jaworski, a 9.750 from Click and a 9.725 from Natalie Trejo.
Denver increased its lead following a 49.175 on bars during the second rotation to bring its total to 98.275. NCSU stayed in third with a 97.075 after a 48.925 on floor.
The Thunderbirds tallied their lowest team score of the night on floor, a 48.775, despite a pair of 9.800's from Shettles and Carly Sigler. The duo led the team on the event and were trailed by Jaworski with a 9.775, Brittney Jensen with a 9.725 and Tyly Bozzuto with a 9.675.
Denver maintained a cushion after the third rotation, scoring a 48.625 on beam, also its lowest mark of the night, for a 146.900. NC State finished with a 49.150 on vault, remaining in third with a 146.225 to Southern Utah's 146.575.
Southern Utah punctuated its night with an exclamation point, recording a season-high 49.125 on vault and notching its highest team score of the year. Four Thunderbirds scored a 9.800 or higher on the event led by Ramirez with a 9.875 which put the freshman in second-place overall. She was followed by Bernier (9.850), Virginia Brownsell (9.825) and Sigler with a career-high 9.800. Shettles was just off the pace with a 9.775 to wrap up her night with a 39.150 in the all-around, marking the highest all-around total for the Thunderbirds this season.
Denver held off the Thunderbird charge, scoring a 49.150 on floor to finish the night with a 196.050. North Carolina State faltered down the stretch, having to count two falls on bars (48.025) to finish with a 194.250.
Denver's Moriah Martin ultimately took the all-around title with a 39.450, followed by teammate Nina McGee with a 39.375 and North Carolina State's Brittni Watkins with a 39.350.
Southern Utah and Denver will have a rematch of the meet next week when the Pioneers travel to Cedar City on February 14. The competition in the Centrum Arena is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. with live stat and live video links available online at www.suutbirds.com.
