(CEDAR CITY, Utah) - For the second straight year Southern Utah University softball will open the season by competing at the Red Desert Classic in St. George, Utah. The Thunderbirds start things off by facing a pair of in-state opponents this Thursday, first taking on Utah State at 2:00 p.m. (MT), followed by a meeting with the BYU Cougars at 4:00 p.m. The T-Birds return to the field against Nevada on Friday at 4:00 p.m. Saturday’s schedule will include matchups against East Carolina at 1:30 and Nebraska Omaha at 4:00 p.m. SUU then wraps up the tournament on Sunday with games against Grand Canyon at 1:3o p.m.
The T-Birds return the core of last year’s team, including all-Big Sky Conference performers Kylee Wolf in the outfiled and Kelli Hales at shortstop. SUU will also once again have the services of the 2013 Newcomer of the Year Ariel (Zimmerman) Hart in the circle and adds an exciting group of new players headlined by the 2012 Ms. Softball award-winner for the state of Utah, freshman Jordan Theurer.
The Thunderbirds were selected third in the Big Sky coaches poll, but have even higher expectations than that after coming within a single win of the league’s first championship last season.
