(VEYO, Utah) – Betty Lou Ann Groothuis Humphreys passed away on Tuesday, December 17, 2013, following a valiant battle with Alzheimer’s disease. She was born on June 27, 1931, in Montevideo, Minnesota, to Lubbert Groothuis and Freida Junker. She married Robert “Bob” Humphreys on March 27, 1959 in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Betty was raised on a farm in Minnesota. After high school, she went to college in White Bear Lake, Minnesota, where she earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary education. She received her teaching certificate and taught all ages in a one-room country school in Minnesota. Betty moved to California in 1956, where she began teaching elementary school in Orange County. She met Bob, and they were later married. She continued her education, working on obtaining her Master’s Degree. In 1973, she and Bob purchased a pheasant farm in Veyo, Utah. They moved their young family there, wanting to raise their two daughters in a better environment than the old neighborhood in California.

Betty began substitute teaching at East Elementary in St. George and one of her student’s parents was so impressed with Betty’s teaching abilities that she hired her to teach all of her children privately in her home. In 1980, she started teaching full time at Santa Clara Elementary, where she taught second graders. She loved teaching children. She truly cared for her students and took great pride helping them learn. Very often she had feedback from students she had taught years before about how she had touched their lives. Betty retired from her beloved school teaching in 1996.

Betty enjoyed reading, cooking, arrowhead hunting, fishing, camping and hunting. Betty thoroughly enjoyed spending time with her family, and her grandchildren were very special to her. She loved helping Bob with the wildlife projects he undertook over the years, including caring for the pheasants and quail, arctic foxes, mink, chinchillas, llamas, goats, sheep, horses and dogs.

Betty is preceded in death by her husband, Bob Humphreys. She is survived by: her daughters, Pam Humphreys (Kurt Wright), LaVerkin, Utah; Becky Workman (Leonard Workman), St. George, Utah; and grandchildren CeAnn Workman, Sandy, Utah; Robert Workman, St. George, Utah; brothers; Ralph (Carmen) Groothuis; Roger (Shirley) Groothuis, of Wisconsin and Chuck (Mary Ann) Groothuis; sisters-in-law Marjorie, Lillian, Sally, and several nieces and nephews. Betty is preceded in death by her parents and siblings; Sabena (Harry) Mills; Marion (Paul) Neal; Leonard Groothuis; Harvey (Marlus) Groothuis; Norman Groothuis, and Gordon Groothuis, all of Minnesota.

Memorial Services will be held at a later date. Our family would like to extend our deepest appreciation for the kind and compassionate care our mom received from the nursing staff from Horizon Hospice Service, and the wonderful, kind and compassionate staff of Beehive Memory Assisted Living Unit in Dixie Downs.
