(CEDAR CITY, Utah) - After qualifying for the NCAA Playoffs for the first time in school history in 2013, Southern Utah’s football team added another first to its resume this year as the Thunderbirds were ranked among the nation’s top-25 teams for the first time in the final NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision polls.

The Thunderbirds wound up ranked 21st in the final Sports Network Poll and 24th in the American Football Coaches Association FCS Coaches Poll.

Southern Utah finished with 591 points to move up one spot in the final Sports Network Poll of journalists and media relations professionals and the Thunderbirds garnered 58 points in the Coaches Poll, also moving up one spot from the final regular-season poll.

The Big Sky had five representatives in both polls – more than any other conference – led by league champion Eastern Washington, which advanced to the semi-finals of the playoffs and finished the season ranked third in both polls. Montana was ranked eighth and Northern Arizona was 15th in both final polls, while Montana State finished 20th in both polls.
