Vital to this program are the docents of the St. George Art Museum. They are people of all ages, from all walks of life: former teachers, retired businessmen, moms, and students, just to name a few. Docents need to be dependable, willing to do some studying and able to commit to at least 2 tours a month. An enjoyment of art and an interest in inspiring children are all it takes to be successful. Docents are always needed and most find it to be a truly enjoyable and rewarding experience.
The docent staff prepares for the school tours with an orientation at the beginning of each new exhibit. Exhibiting artists are often on hand to discuss their exhibit and Museum Manager Deborah Reeder provides the basic knowledge they will need to guide the children’s enjoyment and appreciation. The “inquiry based method” to guiding tours is explained and they are advised to select pieces in advance to focus on through the tour. Many times docents also get together in small groups to share ideas and questions that will capture student interest and get them involved.
If you would like to become a docent, please stop by the St. George Art Museum, Monday - Saturday, 10 – 5 and fill out an application.
