(CEDAR CITY, Utah) - Utah artist J. Kirk Richards is a favorite among admirers of contemporary spiritual artwork. His love of the textural, poetic, and mysterious gives him a unique perspective on traditional Judeo-Christian themes. Richards is best known for his contributions to the BYU Museum of Art and to Helen Whitney’s PBS Frontline Documentary The Mormons: An American Experience. He will be the featured artist in SUU’s Department of Art & Design’s weekly series, Art Insights on December 5, 2013. The presentation will take place in Section JK of SUU’s Centrum Arena on Thursday, December 5, 2013, at 7pm. Admission is free and the general public is encouraged to attend.

    J. Kirk Richards’ work is found in private collections throughout the country, but has also been a subject of 70 solo and group exhibitions Utah, Tennessee, Virginia, and Arizona. His work has been incorporated as cover and content illustrations in contemporary magazines and books; additionally, Richards wrote and illustrated the 2007 National Best Books award-winning children’s book, The Big Move. His Arts Insights presentation will explore his imagery and career, including how his career has developed through specific choices, techniques, and tools—tools that any emerging or established artist can choose to implement in his or her own careers.

Art Insights is a weekly program hosted during the fall and spring semesters by SUU’s Art and Design faculty. Students and community members meet to experience presentations and discussions by visiting artists and art educators from around the nation who share their work and insights and attend gallery openings. Admission is free, and the general public is invited to attend.

This installment of Art Insights is a perfect opportunity for southern Utah artists and residents to acquire skills and tools that J. Kirk Richards has put to use in his successful contemporary art career.
