(ST. GEORGE, Utah) – Maddie Rex (Tucson, AZ/Sabino) slugged a match-high 15 kills to lead the Dixie State women's volleyball team to a 3-0 Pacific West Conference sweep (25-16,25-16,27-25) of Hawaii Hilo tonight in the Student Activities Center.

Rex sparked the Red Storm (15-8/12-5 PWC) to a come from behind victory in the third game to give DSU the crucial PWC victory. With the victory DSU tied the record for the most wins in a season in the D2 era.

Having won the first two games of the match with identical scores at 25-16, the Red Storm started sluggish in the third game. The Vulcans (11-11/5-11 PWC) jumped to an early 8-4 lead and eventually a 19-12 lead.

DSU responded with a run of their own, rattling off seven straight points to tie the match at 19 all. Two quick Vulcan points froze the Red Storm and forced a timeout from head coach Robyn Felder trailing 22-20. DSU rebounded when Makenzi Bird (Saint George, UT/Snow Canyon ) who had 10 kills, no errors and hit .714 for the match, found the floor on assist from Shelby Sorenson (Lehi, UT/Lehi) to cut the UHH lead at 22-21.

The Vulcans just would not back down as they battled back with two more points to force game point at 24-22. DSU went to their bread and butter when Sorenson found Shannon Young (Whittier, CA/St Paul) on the outside for two straight points. Young hit both balls off the top of the blockers and out of bounds to keep the Red Storm hopes alive.

With the game tied at 24-24, a kill by UHH forced game point again but DSU followed with two more Young kills and a Rex kill to dispose of the Vulcans.

"We continue to play good volleyball and will work to finish the season strong, said Felder. "We just have to continue focus on the small things."

Joining Rex in double digit kills was Young at 10, Nicole Koehler (Sandy, UT/Alta) with 11 and Bird. Sorenson finished the match with 47 assists and Anderson led in digs with 18. DSU hit .297 as team for the match and added five service aces.

Callie Aberle led the Vulcans with 14 kills and 14 digs.

The Red Storm have won two straight and will try and make it three in a row when they battle Hawaii Pacific on Saturday at 12 p.m. in Student Activities Center.
