DSU Career Day is intended to help students make informed career and college major decisions. Working professionals from throughout the area, along with DSU professors and staff members, will present information regarding job descriptions, employment projections, education and training needed for a given career, salary information and expectations.
The full morning of events will begin with a general welcome assembly held inside the Avenna Center Cox Auditorium beginning at 9 a.m. The assembly will feature a keynote address presented by Scott Warner, a self-described serial entrepreneur with a portfolio of success spanning everything from tech start-ups to restaurants, from online blogging to film. He is currently the CEO of Gigg.com, which was recently named one of the Top-10 Start-ups of 2013 at SXSW by Complex Tech.
Workshops will be conducted in three 30-minute sessions, beginning at 10:20 a.m.-through-12:10 p.m., in various classrooms and buildings around campus, including the Holland Centennial Commons, the Udvar-Hazy Business Building, the Browning Resource Center, the Snow Science Building and the Jennings Communication Building.
In addition to the workshops, the DSU Career Fair will be taking place simultaneously in the Gardner Center Ballroom from 10 a.m.-to-1 p.m., where exhibitors and DSU academic departments will meet with students and provide information on programs and job opportunities.
The workshops will include information on a number of career options, including computer and information technology, visual technology, elementary and secondary education, law enforcement, military, medical, broadcasting and other communication fields, marketing, business and accounting, construction, cosmetology, culinary arts, and retail, among others.
Due to the number of classrooms used for workshops, morning classes have been cancelled, not only to make way for the number high school students, but to allow DSU students to attend Career Day as well. Afternoon classes (beginning 1 p.m. or later) will continue as scheduled.
