(ST. GEORGE, Utah) – Famed author Oscar Wilde said, "Experience is simply the name we give our mistakes." If so, the youthful Dixie State men's soccer team can build on a season of experiences like Sunday night.

In the 98th minute on a non-conference match, Westminster College leading scorer Ryan Smith cleared a defensive miscue and scored a golden goal to give the visiting Griffins a 1-0 win over Dixie State on Senior Day.

Dixie State (2-10-3) outshot its opponent from up north, but none of the 16 opportunities found the back of the net. It was the last of seven tries from Westminster that improved their record to 8-10-0.

Smith found a loose ball about 20 yards from the goal and the striker lightly floated a shot past Tyler Walters (Ogden, UT/Ben Lomand).

The Red Storm had numerous chances – outshooting Westminster 8-2 in the opening half and 7-4 in the second – including a penalty kick in the 70th minute. The try from Erik Shallenberger (Las Vegas, NV/Arbor View) missed the top left corner by mere inches to keep the match scoreless.

Shallenberger led all players with four shots, three on goal. Alex Lawhun (Draper, UT/Alta) added three for Dixie State and Smith paced the Griffins with three shots.

Walters made five saves for Dixie State while Logan Butzier gets a shutout victory recording seven stops.

Dixie State closes out the 2013 season Saturday at California Baptist in Riverside, Calif.
