“Madi’s goal made her our 15th goal-scorer this season, in all my years of coaching I have never seen anything like this,” commented head coach Becky Hogan. “And it doesn’t end there, we have a lot of kids making assists and putting up stats across the board.”
The Thunderbirds struck first in the 30th minute when Yost sent a high cross from the left side where Brich was able to get up and head the ball past the Eagles goalkeeper to make score 1-0. Then just a few minutes later Yost made another pass, finding Wood this time who finished with a shot to the far post, putting the ball into the right side of the net to extend the advantage to 2-0.
“Chandler is one of out smartest players,” explained Hogan. “The other team gave her a little time on the ball and with her savvy she was able to pick them apart.”
Southern Utah went on to tack on another score in the 82nd minute when junior Christine Meehan sent a free kick to the right side of the box where it was fired back across the front of the goal and into the net by freshman Shelby Green. That score would set the final count at 3-0 as SUU picked up its first true road win of the season.
“We practice at a high level every day, but in games sometimes the youth of our team shows,” said Hogan. “Today that didn’t really happen. We stuck to our game plan and just played within ourselves.”
The Thunderbirds recorded ten shots on goal while holding the Eagles to just three and held a 5-1 advantage on corner kicks. Brich’s goal was her team-leading fourth of the season while Green picked up her third score and Wood notched her first. Meehan’s assist was her team-high third of the year. Sophomore goalkeeper Tessa Christensen made three saves to record her first career shutout.
“Right now we need a brave presence in goal, someone who will sacrifice their body,” stated Hogan. “Tessa is a true competitor and gives her max effort on every single play. That has been inspirational to the players around her.”
Southern Utah finishes up the season with another road game this Sunday as the team visits the University of Montana for a one o’clock matchup. The Thunderbirds were eliminated from the postseason earlier in the day after Idaho State’s win at North Dakota. Coverage of SUU soccer is available on www.suutbirds.com.
