(ST. GEORGE, Utah) – On October 22nd a St. George business contacted the St. George Police Department in regards to a suspicious telephone call. The business received a telephone call from someone claiming to be the utility company. The individual who called demanded payment for past due bills. The business owner did the right thing and did not provide the caller with any information. Instead the business owner contacted the real utility company and confirmed that they did not owe any money. It is suspected that the caller was trying to fraudulently take money from the business. The St. George Police Department only received this one report. It is unknown if any other individuals were contacted or who made the call. We want the public to be aware of this scam and not fall victim to these practices. If you receive a telephone call from someone claiming to be from the “utility company” don’t give them personal information over the telephone, ask them to send you something in writing to verify their claims. Also, contact your utility company and verify with them the status of your account.
