  • Hiker Killed by Falling Tree in West Fork

    (OAK CREEK CANYON, Ariz) – On October 17th, 80 year old Phyllis Lindberg of Sedona, Arizona was hiking with four friends in West Fork of Oak Creek Canyon. The group stopped for lunch shortly after 11:00 am and rested on a log near the trail. A large conifer tree fell striking Ms. Lindberg who died from injuries resulting from the impact. Another member of the hiking party received minor injuries during the incident and refused medical treatment.

    Members of the hiking party made the emergency call for help which was received initially by the Sedona Fire Department. Sedona Fire responded to the scene and found Lindberg deceased. Coconino County Sheriff’s Office Deputies, Detectives, Search and Rescue and Forest Service Law Enforcement responded to the scene. The incident occurred approximately 2.5 miles from the West Fork Trailhead off Hwy 89A. Search and Rescue Team Members recovered the victim by stokes basket.

    Would often see Phyllis coming back from the Broken Arrow hiking trail. She loved to hike and as freaky as these circumstances are, atleast she was doing something that she dearly, dearly loved.
