Sgt. Heppler said that there has been a 42 percent reduction in graffiti in the last few years, which helps deter gang crimes, to prevent any 'epidemic' in gang activity from happening.
The SGPD Gang Unit works closely with the school resource officers each assigned to Washington County School District's intermediate, middle and high schools. They identify at-risk youth to intervene and prevent young people from getting involved with gangs.
Sgt. Heppler advocates members of the community supporting sports, church, Scouts or other civic groups to create a place of positive belonging for at-risk youth.
