(WASHINGTON, DC) – U.S. Senator Orrin Hatch (R-Utah) today met with Secretary of the Air Force nominee Deborah Lee James. Hatch and James discussed the future of the Air Force, Hill Air Force Base and other issues important to Utah. James was nominated by President Barack Obama on August 1, 2013, to succeed Michael Donley, who retired as Secretary on June 21, 2013. Utah currently has more than 22,000 active duty, civilian, and reserve Air Force personnel in the state.

“I appreciate Deborah coming in and meeting with me today to discuss the next steps of the Air Force and what that will mean to the state of Utah,” Hatch said. “We had a productive discussion about each of our priorities for the Air Force moving forward. Our military faces some tough tests ahead, from shrinking budgets to enemies that seek to harm Americans, and I look forward to working with Deborah to confront them should she be confirmed to this important post.”

James’ nomination is currently before the Senate Armed Services Committee. Should her confirmation be approved by the Committee, it will go before the full Senate for approval.
