(DRAPER, Utah) - The third annual “Race for Help” is growing from one to three races to raise money and awareness about the crisis involving individuals and families displaced from polygamous communities. The non-profit group Holding Out HELP is sponsoring a 1k, 5k and 10k race on September 14 to provide independence and self-sufficiency for people from polygamous backgrounds.

Holding Out HELP has provided housing, food, clothing, counseling, mentoring, job training, education and referral services to more than 600 clients. The organization is currently helping more than 200 people, many are homeless, destitute and have no place to go.

Holding Out HELP is also building a community center in Colorado City. The center is expected to open next month and will include an Internet cafe, thrift store, book and food distribution and it will be available for community events.

Last year’s race included “Sister Wives” reality TV star Merri Brown and raised more than $4,000. Elissa Wall, author of “Stolen Innocence” and Utah’s key witness against Warren Jeffs will speak at this year’s race. Holding Out HELP has been able to draw support from people with differing views on polygamy because the organization focuses on helping people “where they are at.”
