(OREM, Utah) - Governor Gary R. Herbert will join Voices for Utah Children in a nationwide effort to make every day count by declaring September “Attendance Awareness Month.” This will take place at the Westmore Elementary School where the Governor attended first through fifth grade.

Westmore Elementary was rebuilt this year and just opened for the school year. A select group of students will take the Governor on a brief tour of the newly constructed school. The tour will end at the gymnasium where the Governor will address the entire student body.

A recent study released by the University of Utah Education Policy Center found that 13.5 percent of Utah students are chronically absent, missing at least 10 percent of the school year. It’s important for parents and students to understand the negative effect regular absences can have on proficiencies and performance tests.
