(ST. GEORGE, Utah) - On Aug. 3 at 10:30 a.m. (in the Rocky Mountain time zone) in locations across the United States and beyond, nursing mothers will gather to raise awareness of the benefits of breastfeeding and celebrate World Breastfeeding Week by breastfeeding simultaneously. This year’s theme is “Support Breastfeeding: Close to Mothers.”

Last year 8,862 children were recorded as breastfeeding during the Global Big Latch On – a world record for the most children simultaneously breastfeeding. “We hope to break that record this year,” said Kerry Ann Humphrey, the lactation specialist at Dixie Regional who is coordinating the local event. “Breastfeeding mothers who would like to participate are invited to the SelectHealth Auditorium at 1424 E. Foremaster Drive.

We’ll begin at 10 a.m. although the actual simultaneous breastfeeding for one minute will occur at 10:30 a.m. Light refreshments will be offered.”

The first Big Latch On took place in Aotearoa New Zealand in 2005 and was introduced in the United States in 2010. It is now celebrated in 120 countries.

Humphrey said breastfeeding contributes to the normal growth and development of infants, lowering the risk of infant morbidity and mortality, adult obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, osteoporosis, and premenopausal breast cancer and ovarian cancer (in both mother and baby). The World Health Organization recommends breastfeeding exclusively for the first six months of a baby’s life to optimize these benefits, continuing to breastfeed for 2 years and as long thereafter as is mutually desired by a woman and her child.
