“We established this fund because we want to help young LDS members who are LGBTQ to be successful in life,” said scholarship founder, Sherry Park. The scholarship was created so that young adults who have been baptized into the LDS faith and who identify as LGBTQ know that there are funds available to help them reach for higher education, and that there are individuals in the community who support their educational goals.
The Community Foundation and the Parks hope that the scholarship will attract other donors who share a commitment to the LDS Church, to education, and to equality. “We are delighted to partner with the Parks to create this new fund. This scholarship sends an important message, and reflects a fundamental value we share as Utahns – the power and promise of education, and respect and support for all members of our community,” said Community Foundation Director, Fraser Nelson.
The fund will award its first scholarships in 2013 with gifts of $1,000 for two degree programs in Utah. For more information on the Sit with Me Sunday Scholarship at the Community Foundation of Utah, please write firstname.lastname@example.org. Donations are accepted at www.utahcf.org.
